I never feel uncomfortable in the prone position in my chest rig. A proper prone firing position means you tuck your elbows in under your shoulders lifting your chest off the ground, the rig sits in the natural void. In addition if its cold and wet your chest keeps warm. The main advantage of a chest rig is you can get at everything without having to reach behind, take it off or ask a mate to get it. I find this invaluable when multi tasking around cadets and also as its a ******* to take off once its on I am unlikley to set a bad example by not having webbing on. Lastly as sapce is ristricted I am not tempted to carry too much kit in my webbing which in all honestly should be in a day sack.( The average cadet will never get 9+ magazines so there are plenty of empty magazine pouches). Been using mine exclusivly for ten years, never used plce etc, and is still my favourite bit of kit. Only problem was on my weapons test on KG6 when the ADS was not happy about me not having plce on, similar comments have been made on APWT but as a Captain I can ignore them !

If you think webbing looks warrier than a chest rig you have clearly never seen the famous Tim Page photo of a LURP in Vietnam wearing the original chicom chest rig.
These were so useful that both the South Africans and the Isreali's copied them. This together with the vests issued to aircrew and SEALS were the origins of chest rigs and assualt vests, although similar ideas were tried out by commandos in WWII. End of history lesson. |

Good point although bandoliers were for ammo only, however they must have been the inspiration for the original chicom rig, as in lets put our AK mags in a bandolier, oopps they're to big, lets make it bigger.

I have both, Webbing and Assault Vest but i find webbing is much more comfortable and easier to close (if you get what i mean
)where as an assault vest if you put something in it you have to worry about opening the buckles at the back which can be a challenge if your not that flexible and then worry about getting it back in and closing the buckle and the webbing has velcro so its alot easier ![]() so i favour the webbing ![]() |
