To try and get some interest in the First Aid Section, I, Retro Cadet, KWu and Harry Flashman have devised a competition which has started and will end at 0.00 on Sunday 28th February.
You will have to diagnose a patient and devise a plan of action based on their injury/illness. Rules: You may ask (any amount of) questions; I will respond as the patient. Please send questions via PM, they will then be posted on the thread by me - to allow a fair playing field and to keep the thread understandable/easy to read. If you have seen this scenario before you cannot enter. Each member has three attempts to correctly diagnose and treat the patient. After that your attempts will be ignored. You must send your answer by PM. Qualified paramedics may not answer this question. You will not get rep for incomplete answers - it must consist of the diagnosis and treatment. My decision is final. Prizes: First Correct Diagnosis: 45 Rep Points Second Correct Diagnosis: 25 Rep Points Third Correct Diagnosis: 5 Rep Points Successful answers after that: 1 Rep Point Good Luck. If you have any questions as to the format, please PM me. ![]() Last edited by FYI - The Best : 14-02-2010 at 04:19 PM. |

You have been called to visit an elderly male patient, on a warm summers day; you arrive at his house to find him lying on the floor - at the bottom of the stairs conscious.
You observe/know that: - He has a broken leg (no other obvious injuries) - You have already adequately treated this injury, he is now sitting comfortably in his armchair in the living room. - He has fallen down the stairs - His elderly wife was taken to hospital (by ambulance) about two hours ago. (There is no way to find out why) He complains of: - Headache - Leg pains (Cramp) - Mild dizziness - Skin is pale and damp to touch As you wait for the transport to take him to hospital, (it will be about an hour - he is not a 'Category 1') you note that he is gradually becoming more pale and his headache becomes slightly worse.) All you have is a bog-standard First Aid kit, similar to what you get in a car. (Bandages, plasters, tape, scissors, gloves etc) Please carefully read the rules and adhere to them . If you do not understand what I am expecting as answers, PM me. I have spent many hours to devise a suitable scenario, so I hope you find it challenging and mildly fun! Apologies for posting it slightly early, I have to go and teach some SJA volunteers about 'Working Safely with Young People' as the usual trainer is sick. **This is where I will post the questions and answers you ask via PM**
If I answer ??? to a question it means the patient would be unable to answer it i.e. Are you suffering from a brain hemorrhage. Do you recall just the accident, or all of the accident? I remember most of it, I went up the stairs, turned and then I think I fell forwards onto my leg. Do you remember what happened to you on the stairs, and have you fallen over before? I fall over no more than anyone else if thats what your saying. Errr, I think I fell onto my leg and slid down the stairs, I'm not entirely sure. Do you have anything your doctor gives you medicine for? Just the old, GTN spray for me angina. (He has taken this recently) Did you bang your head at all? I really can't remember, I just have these headaches. (No visible signs or signs of pain on inspection of his head) Can you feel me touch your fingers and toes? Not my right-most toe, but thats been like that since 2000 when I stubbed it against a door, I couldn't walk for weeks after that incident. What type of boiler/heating system do you have? Its a brand new electric boiler, cost me my pension for five months. What are his pupil dilation like? Slow but equal constriction and dilation when exposed to light. Clue, look carefully at my answers to questions, there are a lot of 'thinks'. Then note he never says exactly what happened at the top of the stairs.

You only have until Sunday, so far I have had very little guesses and none have been right. So still a good chance to get 45 Rep Points!!
Clues:
Get posting your questions and PMing your answers! You have nothing to lose!! Last edited by FYI - The Best : 27-02-2010 at 05:13 PM. |

I've watched enough episodes of 'House' and reckon I'm really good at this diagnosis lark.
Is it Lupus?

Added some more clues, look at the text in red.
The 45 Points are still available and no-one has submitted a correct answer. Closing deadline will be extended to midweek (Wednesday at 9pm) if I receive no correct answers by the end of the day. |

Not long left now, it seems I must really help you out!!
His lips appear dry...??? If someone doesn't get it now, its probably quicker to feed it into the '20 Question" ball. |
